Refundable vs. Nonrefundable Hotel Rates: Which Should You Choose?
The cheaper rate is not always the better value when flights, schedules or travel companions may change.
What refundable really means
A refundable rate usually allows cancellation without a room charge before a specified deadline. Deadlines may use the hotel's local time, and deposits, payment timing and exceptions vary.
What nonrefundable really means
A nonrefundable rate may require advance payment and may not allow free cancellation or date changes. Do not assume a travel disruption automatically qualifies for a refund.
When paying more for flexibility makes sense
Consider refundable rates for uncertain itineraries, standby travel, complex connections, visa-dependent trips or destinations with unpredictable conditions.
How to calculate the flexibility premium
Subtract the nonrefundable total from the refundable total. For example, if a three-night stay is $330 nonrefundable or $360 refundable, flexibility costs $30 total. Decide whether that protection is worth the extra $10 per night.
Check the exact cutoff
Record the final free-cancellation date and time, time zone, penalties after the deadline, deposit terms, no-show charges and whether shortening the stay changes the price.
A sensible booking routine
Reserve a refundable room when plans are uncertain, set a reminder before the cancellation deadline, then recheck rates before the penalty window begins. Never hold reservations you cannot manage responsibly.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change a nonrefundable hotel booking?
Sometimes, but only if the property or booking provider agrees or the rate rules allow it.
Does travel insurance cover nonrefundable hotels?
Coverage depends on the policy, covered reasons and exclusions. Read the actual policy before relying on it.

Read the rate-specific rules
Cancellation rights come from the particular rate's terms and applicable law. For brand-direct reservations, start with Hilton's official help resources or Marriott's official terms, then read the actual booking conditions. Neither a brand-wide FAQ nor the word “refundable” establishes your exact deadline.
