Walkable, central, quieter.
Stay near the river in District 1, a few blocks from the noise.
Which part of District 1?
The riverside and Dong Khoi area is District 1 at its best: the Opera House, Nguyen Hue walking street, the Central Post Office and Notre-Dame Cathedral are all within a short walk, along with many of the city's best restaurants and upscale hotels.
The Bui Vien and Pham Ngu Lao area, at the other end of District 1, is the backpacker zone. It's fun for a night out, but bars play loud music until around 4 a.m. and the streets are packed.
Riverside / Dong Khoi
- Walk to the main sights and the best restaurants
- Upscale hotels with river views
- Calmer at night
Bui Vien / Pham Ngu Lao
- Cheaper rooms
- Loud music and crowds until the early hours
- Better for a night out than a good night's sleep
For a slower pace on a longer stay, District 3 has quieter streets and great cafés a short walk from District 1, and Thao Dien, across the river, is popular with expats and families. For a first visit, riverside District 1 is the simplest choice.

Watch out for
- Priced like an upscale international hotel
- River-view rooms cost more than city views
- Traffic to the airport can be slow at rush hour

What it costs, and when to go
District 1 is the most expensive area of the city, with hotels often 30–50% higher than neighboring districts. In our October 24 check of our partner's map, using its default sample dates, the three upscale hotels in this guide ran from about $232 to $255 a night.
- Dry season: about December to April, the most comfortable time to visit.
- Rainy season: about May to November, usually with heavy afternoon downpours that pass quickly. It's still very visitable.
- Tết (Vietnamese New Year): January or February. Many shops and restaurants close for several days, and travel is busy.
Costs to plan for
- Service charge and VAT: many hotels quote prices before a 5% service charge and VAT. Check whether a rate is "net" or "++".
- Visa: most visitors, including US citizens, need a Vietnamese e-visa. Apply only through the official government portal.
- Airport transfer: Tan Son Nhat airport is about 30–45 minutes from District 1 by car, depending on traffic. A Grab car is the easiest option.
- Getting around: District 1 is walkable, and Grab is cheap for everything else. Cross streets slowly and steadily; traffic flows around you.

| Le Méridien Saigon | On the riverfront along Ton Duc Thang Street, with river views. | The walk to Nguyen Hue and Dong Khoi, and the price difference for your dates. |
