Pick your beach first.
Kata for calm, Patong for energy, Karon for space.
Kata, Karon or Patong?
Kata is a lively but relaxed beach town with cafés, beach clubs and good swimming in calm months, plus quieter Kata Noi just to the south. Karon, next door, has one of the island's longest beaches and a calm, spacious feel with little nightlife. Patong is Phuket's entertainment hub, with Bangla Road's bars and clubs, night markets, big malls and crowded sand.
Kata and Karon
- Calmer beaches, good for families and couples
- Kata and Karon are about 5 minutes apart
- Sunset viewpoints and beach dining
Patong
- Bars, clubs, shopping and night markets
- Busy, crowded and loud late at night
- About 10–15 minutes' drive north of Karon
All three are on the west coast, roughly an hour's drive from Phuket airport, so budget for a transfer whichever you choose.
Featured hotel: M Social Hotel Phuket
A stylish, upscale hotel at 199 Rat-U-Thit 200 Pee Road in Patong, formerly the Millennium Resort Patong Phuket, relaunched as M Social from November 2023. It sits right beside the Jungceylon shopping mall, with indoor access, and has 418 rooms and suites, two pools with pool bars, and two restaurants.
Strengths
- Right beside Jungceylon, so shops, restaurants and cinemas are steps away
- About a 3-minute walk to Bangla Road and 7 minutes to Patong Beach
- Refreshed rooms with excellent recent guest ratings, especially for cleanliness
- Two pools and pool bars, plus a children's pool
Watch out for
- It's in Patong, which is busy and loud at night
- Not on the beach: allow a short walk
- About an hour from the airport
I highly recommend this hotel. It's in an excellent location, beside the Jungceylon shopping mall, so it was very convenient for shopping or dining when I didn't feel like going into the crowds. Very clean and modern. If you want peace and quiet, though, stay in Kata rather than Patong.
Before you book
- Ask for a room in the quieter Sunkissed wing if you're a light sleeper
- Check whether breakfast is included
- Compare the price with Kata hotels if a quiet beach matters more than convenience

What it costs, and when to go
Phuket prices rise sharply in high season. In our October 24 check of our partner's map, using its default sample dates, two of the three hotels in this guide had rooms, at about $228 and $454 a night. Plug your own dates into the map for real numbers.
- High season: about November to April, with calm seas and the highest prices, especially around Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year.
- Monsoon season: about May to October. Hotels are cheaper, but seas can be rough and beaches often fly red flags. Swim only between the flags.
- Shoulder months: late April and early November can offer good weather and better prices.
Costs to plan for
- Service charge and VAT: a rate shown "++" adds a 10% service charge and 7% VAT, about 17.7% in total.
- Arrival card: Thailand requires a free online Thailand Digital Arrival Card, completed within three days before you arrive. Use only the official immigration site.
- Airport transfer: it's about an hour to Patong, Kata or Karon. Book a transfer or use a ride app rather than an unmarked taxi.
- Day trips: Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay and island tours are extra. Book with licensed operators and check weather cancellation policies.
Use the trip cost calculator to add flights, transfers and extras to your hotel price, or the true-cost calculator to compare two hotels' real totals.
Two more hotels to compare
Both are in Kata, for travelers who want a calmer beach than Patong.
| Hotel | Why compare it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Katathani Phuket Beach Resort | Large, well-rated beachfront resort on quiet Kata Noi Beach. | Price for your dates, which can be high in peak season, and room location within the resort. |
| The Boathouse Phuket | Small, highly rated boutique hotel at the southern end of Kata Beach. | Room size and view, and the price difference from larger resorts. |
Five checks before you book
- Choose your beach first: Kata or Karon for calm, Patong for nightlife.
- Compare the total for your dates, including service charge and VAT.
- Check the season. Monsoon months are cheaper but rougher at sea.
- Complete your Thailand Digital Arrival Card online before you fly.
- Book your airport transfer in advance; it's about an hour each way.
