Cancun Airport to Your Resort: Taxis, Shuttles, ADO Bus and Uber

Your first decision after landing in Cancun, made easy: what each option costs in 2026, how long it takes, why Uber is unreliable at arrivals, and how to walk past the sales pitches in the terminal.

Traveler question · Updated October 25, 2026 · Prices are typical 2026 ranges from transfer guides and change often. Confirm when you book.

The short answer: pre-book a private transfer. To the Hotel Zone it's about $45–$65 per vehicle, and your driver waits at arrivals with your name. On a budget, a shared shuttle (about $10–$20 per person) or the ADO bus (about $8 to downtown or Playa del Carmen) works. Don't count on Uber for pickups, and ignore anyone offering rides inside the terminal.
Levi's tip

My transfer from Cancun airport to the Royalton resorts near Puerto Morelos took roughly 30 minutes.

Private transfers: the easiest choice

A private transfer means one vehicle for your group, booked ahead, with a driver who tracks your flight and meets you outside arrivals. It costs more than a shared shuttle, but there are no stops at other hotels, and it usually costs about the same as an official taxi. For a family or a group, it can work out cheaper per person than a shared shuttle. Book with a company that lists a flat price in writing and includes flight tracking. Resort-arranged transfers are convenient but often cost much more, so compare first.

Shared shuttles

Shared shuttles run from the airport to the hotel areas for about $10–$20 per person to the Hotel Zone. They're cheapest for one or two travelers, but you may wait for the van to fill, and the drive can take up to an hour with stops at other hotels.

Official airport taxis

Only authorized taxis can pick up at the terminals. Buy at the official counter inside the airport, agree the price before you get in, and pay in pesos if you can. Expect about $45–$60 to the Hotel Zone. Never take a ride from someone who approaches you in the terminal.

Can you take an Uber from Cancun airport?

Not reliably. A 2024 court ruling allowed Uber to operate at federal airports, but Mexico's transport ministry said ride apps still lack permission to pick up in airport zones, and the local taxi cooperatives control arrivals. In practice, regular Uber drivers often decline airport pickups or ask you to walk 10–15 minutes outside with your luggage. Drop-offs for your departure are generally fine. The Uber Taxi option in the app books a regulated airport taxi at the normal taxi rate.

The ADO bus

ADO's comfortable coaches leave from outside the terminals for downtown Cancun (about 145 pesos, 25–30 minutes) and Playa del Carmen (about $8–$15, 60–75 minutes). Buy tickets at the ADO counters in arrivals or in the ADO app. The catch: the bus stops at bus stations, not hotels, so you'll still need a taxi for the last stretch.

Walking out of the terminal

Between baggage claim and the exit, you'll pass a hall of people in uniforms offering "information," transport or a free tour. Many are selling timeshares. Unless you've booked with them, keep walking and say "no, gracias." Your pre-booked driver will be outside the doors, usually holding a sign with your name.

Five tips

  1. Book your transfer before you fly, with a flat price and flight tracking.
  2. Save the company's WhatsApp or phone number in case your flight is late.
  3. Keep some pesos in small bills for tips (about $2–$5 per bag or ride is usual).
  4. Check the drive time to your resort: Tulum is nearly two hours away.
  5. Leave about three hours for international departures in peak season.
